-Always run a filter before the pump. -Keep them as close to the tank as you can. Electric pumps push fuel much better than they can pull it. -Mount them away from heat sources such as exhaust.

Remove the pump from the mower, using a wrench or pliers, and a screwdriver. Disassemble the pump by carefully removing screws that hold its parts together. Be careful not to damage seals or gaskets. Once you have the pump open and are able to see its various parts, look for damaged, broken, or bent parts.

Connect the line to the fuel pump, and then reattach the other end to the carburetor. Use a wrench to hold the fuel pump fitting and tighten the line nut with another wrench. Attach the fuel inlet hose from the gas tank, and the vapour return hose (if the vehicle is equipped with one). Tighten all clamps. Reconnect the battery ground cable, start the vehicle and check for leaks.

If the pump is good other possibilities include wiring problems in the fuel pump circuit (loose, corroded or broken wires, bad grounds), a defective fuel pump relay or blown fuse, an obstruction in the fuel pump inlet filter or fuel line, a plugged fuel filter, or leaky or defective fuel pressure regulator.

Remove the fuel pump module so you can manipulate the float arm. At this point, with the key in the ON position (but without starting the engine), back-probe the connector and check for voltage. You should always have 5 V or 12 V on one of the pins. One of the other pins will be voltage feedback to the gas gauge.

Consult your owner's manual and locate the fuse box. Remove the fuse for the fuel pump. Your owner's manual or a chart on the fuse box cover should indicate which one. Once the fuse is removed, start your engine and let it run until the engine dies. This will depressurise your fuel lines and remove any residual fuel from the lines.
