Geothermal heat pumps don't generate heat — they just transfer it from the ground into your home. For every 1 unit of energy used to power your geothermal system, on average 4 units of heat energy are supplied… Why geothermal heat pumps use more electricity than furnaces (but less than conventional air conditioners)

FAQ

Those who are looking for an answer to the question «Why is my electric bill so high with geothermal?» often ask the following questions:

👉 Why is my electric bill so high with geothermal electricity?

I agree that your power use seems high. I believe that something is causing the house to be entirely, or nearly entirely heated with resistance strips only. This can happen regardless of thermostat calls or setpoints. The compressor may be locking out, and the most common cause is low loop temperatures or flows.

👉 Why is my electric bill so high with geothermal energy?

It really does sound like a problem of heat loss/ energy efficiency. Along with that, it seems that it could be the controls of the electric heat coupled with the high load. Make sure, along with the energy audit, that the electric heat is only being used when necessary. Also, with an energy audit, make sure someone who's competent does it. Some I've seen done are a joke.

👉 Why is my electric bill so high with geothermal power?

A furnace consumes a very small amount of electricity to power the fan, and other minor electrical components, but most of the heat is generated through combustion. A geothermal heat pump uses electricity to power the compressor, fan, and circulating pumps.

That is why I have a hard time believing it is the geo unit or installation, but with all the effort we have put into additional insulation and air sealing, I was so distressed when I got our last electric bill and saw that our ave kw usage has gone up to 129 from 85, and it was warmer this year.

As the prices of natural gas, propane, and heating oil increase with respect to the price of electricity, the savings associated with getting geothermal increase too. Historically, the rise in electricity prices has been slow but steady while natural gas, propane, and heating oil prices tend to be more volatile.

I discoverd that my electric heat was kicking on every time the geothermal was running, including in cool mode. The cause was that the emergency heat circuit was jumpered off of the compressor circuit in the geo unit and not wired into the thermostat at all.

Why is my electric bill so high with geothermal? The system could be much more expensive if it’s colder outside and the heating set point is set much higher than it was with the propane system. Increasing the set point with geothermal is common.

ORIG: I'm having trouble with the math. Your electricity bill is $300 higher than before, but before you were heating with gas. So the geothermal costs $300 a month in total. This seems high for 5-tons of heating, but maybe right if it is running 24/7. (I would check for an electric strip) How much was your gas bill before?

If you receive a high electric bill in the winter and if you heat your Indianapolis area home with an electric heat pump and if you notice your heat pump runs 24/7, you might presume the heat pump is the problem. The trouble is, you normally have to call your heating contractor to see if the heat pump is working properly.
