FAQ

Those who are looking for an answer to the question «Why was the electric lamp invented?» often ask the following questions:

👉 Who invented electric lamp?

  • Who invented the first electric lamp ? In 1802, English Chemist Humphry Davy invented the first electric lamp. It was an electric arc lamp. The electric light worked by creating an arc of electricity through the air between two charcoal electrodes, connected to voltaic piles.

👉 Who invented the electric lamp first invented?

In 1870s, Sir Joseph Swann and Thomas Edison, independently of each other, made first electric lamp that could last longer than few hours by using carbon filament in vacuum. That gave electric lamp that burned with stronger light and that could last for more than 1200 hours.

👉 When were electric lamp invented?

In 1870s, Sir Joseph Swann and Thomas Edison, independently of each other, made first electric lamp that could last longer than few hours by using carbon filament in vacuum. That gave electric lamp that burned with stronger light and that could last for more than 1200 hours. Later improvements used tungsten filament and atmosphere of inert gas which gave even brighter light and lasted longer because gas reduces evaporation of tungsten.

The electric lamp was invented because whale oil, the preferred oil for oil lamps, was becoming more and more expensive and people wanted a low cost, reliable source of light that was less likely to start a fire.

In 1870s, Sir Joseph Swann and Thomas Edison, independently of each other, made first electric lamp that could last longer than few hours by using carbon filament in vacuum. History of electric lamps begins at about the same time when we used gas and kerosene to light houses and streets. It started humbly but it changed humanity from the foundations, from how we light things to much complex inventions. First experiments in electrical illumination were made by Sir Humphry Davy, chemist and inventor, in the 19th century.

In 1835, the first constant electric light was demonstrated, and for the next 40 years, scientists around the world worked on the incandescent lamp, tinkering with the filament (the part of the bulb that produces light when heated by an electrical current) and the bulb’s atmosphere (whether air is vacuumed out of the bulb or it is filled with an inert gas to prevent the filament from oxidizing and burning out).

Sir Joseph Swann of England and Thomas Edison both invented the first electric incandescent lamps during the 1870s. Incandescent light bulbs work in this way: electricity flows through the filament that is inside the bulb; the filament has resistance to the electricity; the resistance makes the filament heat to a high temperature; the heated filament then radiates light.

In 1801 Sir Humphrey Davy invented the first electric carbon arc lamp by connecting two wires to the battery and attaching a charcoal strip to the other end of the wires making charge carbon glow. Again primitive, it needed perfecting and during the 1870s, both Thomas Edison and Sir Joseph Swann invented electric incandescent lamp independently (Edison by improving the 50 year old patent).

The lamps produce significant ultraviolet output, they require ventilation when used indoors, and due to their intensity they need protection from direct sight. Invented by Humphry Davy around 1805, the carbon arc was the first practical electric light.

The development of the electric lamp at the turn of the 19th century stemmed the trend toward gas lamps, and by 1911 the conversion of gas fixtures for use with electricity had begun. Soon electricity was rapidly replacing gas for general illuminating purposes.

The Mercury Arc: Some early visionaries discovered that by adding mercury into the enclosed arc lamp a green light was created. This was an early predecessor to the mercury vapor lamp. When the hot lamp struck it vaporized the mercury stuck to the inside of the bulb, this helped produce better light with a higher efficiency.

Edison's goal in developing his lamp was for it to be used as one part of a much larger system: a long-life high-resistance lamp that could be connected in parallel to work economically with the large-scale electric-lighting utility he was creating.

Sir Humphry Davy constructed the first arc lamp (1807), using a battery of 2,000 cells to create a 100-millimetre (4-inch) arc between two charcoal sticks. When suitable electric generators became available in the late 1870s, the practical use of arc lamps began.
